Rotter er sosiale dyr og bør ikke holdes alene. Rotter bør ikke holdes sammen med dyr av andre dyrearter, da dette kan medføre at rottene skader disse. Rotter trenger god plass for å trives, pass derfor på å kjøpe et stort nok bur. Buret må også sørge for nok lufting og klatremuligheter, samt skjulesteder.
